PWA VS. Application native

5 octobre 2020

Mobile website, native mobile application, Progressive Web App (PWA), you may be wondering about the different possible interfaces to offer the most pleasant and adapted experience to mobile users.

More and more companies are opting for PWA, an application that we presented to you in a previous article. What differences are there with the classic mobile applications that we have been accustomed to for several years?

Comparison of the two types of application

  • The Progressive Web App only needs to be developed once to adapt to different operating systems (iOS and Android). It is then less expensive and its development time is less.In comparison, a native application requires the development of several interfaces to adjust to each operating system.
  • Access to the Progressive Web App is directly via the website, without needing to go through the app stores. On the contrary, native applications depend on stores. They must be validated before they can be added to download platforms.
  • Access to PWA content is done directly via the web. It does not need to be downloaded, so its use is faster and more straightforward. A native application must be installed and its content fully downloaded to be used
  • The PWA is updated in real time, automatically. On the other hand, the modification or improvement of a native application must necessarily go through the store and be the subject of an installation.
  • The PWA uses very little storage space compared to a native application. In fact, we access the content directly via the web browser.
  • Access to PWAs is through search engines, they benefit from natural SEO.Their reputation comes from the structure, content or keywords. Google, through its algorithm, also highlights this type of application. On the contrary, access to native applications is mainly through the stores. Thus their notoriety depends on ASO, that is to say their reputation on the platform (number of downloads, services offered, description, reviews).
  • A native application functions optimally. Its development specially adapted to each operating system allows it to use all of the smartphone's functionalities. The PWA is an optimized website in the form of an application. Therefore, certain functionalities may sometimes be reduced.
  • Just like a native app, it is possible to create user engagement through the PWA through access to certain features. However, iOS restricts some of them. This is the case for Push notifications, which are not compatible with Apple devices. Overall, the PWA currently remains less efficient on iOS than on Android.

If the native application and the Progressive Web App seem similar, the PWA appears ideal if you want a mobile application that reflects your website. Less expensive and quicker to implement, PWA will, among other things, increase customer engagement.
